MIND

Hardship or Breakthrough?

One of my mentors taught me something invaluable. Whenever faced with a challenge or an obstacle that scares, we must approach the mountain with the mindset of “I want that/this.” It must be done within a 5-second window.

The “5-second rule” was coined by Mel Robbins. It states that whenever we get an urge to do something – positive or hard/scary – we have 5 seconds to direct our brain to follow through with our command. If we wait longer than 5 seconds, the brain’s default state will convince us not to go through. The brain wants us to repeat the same habit and remain in the known comfort.

Next time when you need to get out of bed, engage in public speaking, or do something that scares you, say “I want that,” embrace the fear, count backwards from 5-4-3-2-1 and just do it. We can stay in our comfort zone, or push through the hardship and receive the breakthrough.
